Certified Forest Products
The end result of all the effort that goes into certification is that consumers have the ability to purchase products that they know come from forests that are managed sustainably.
It is important that producers and vendors of wood products receive the message that consumers care about where their wood comes from, and that they will look for the FSC logo to ensure that the product originates from a forest managed to meet a strong standard of environmental protection.
So next time you are visiting your local lumberyard, office supply store, or any other retailer that sells forest products, ask if they carry products bearing the FSC logo. If not, why not ask them to order some?
Better yet, visit the Canadian Eco-Lumber Co-op, a marketing and distribution co-operative for FSC-certified wood products with a showroom in Richmond, BC.
Chain of Custody Certification
Once a forest is certified under FSC as being "well managed", it is important to be able to trace the wood it produces all the way through until it is sold to the final consumer. This process, known as "Chain of Custody" requires a separate certification. This involves verifying that at every stage of transportation and production of the wood – from forest gate, to the mill, to the secondary manufacturer, to the store that sells the product- documentation exists that can prove where the wood came from.
